Well done girls!
This past week has been crazy. I've spent a whole lot of time answering emails, folding patterns & lots of stuff other than sewing ... and that makes for a very cranky Kellie!!! So yesterday afternoon I decided that enough was enough and I powered up the Bernina and I've whipped up a little something to share with you all for Easter. This is my little Honey Bunny ... I'm making this for Jessie ...she's my little honey bunny :)
Because the clock is ticking and I need to be up in the morning to go here to do a class with this amazing woman I am going to post this tutorial in two parts ...
Honey Bunny - part one
You will need ...
two 11" squares of white fabric - one for background fabric & the other for the quilt sandwich backing fabric
fabric scraps for applique
11" square of batting
one 9" x 12" sheet of Lite Steam-A-Seam 2
Rotary cutter, quilting ruler, pins needles & scissors
Sewing machine capable of lowering feed dogs & a darning / free motion foot.
Jeans needle - 80/12
Lead pencil & water soluble pen
matching threads
What to do ...
1. Down load the applique shapes and print out ready for use. Always follow the manufactures directions regarding the use of your fusible web.Trace the appliqué shapes onto the backing paper of the fusible web using a lead pencil ensuring that you leave adequate space between your shapes to allow them to be separated while still leaving a small margin around each of them.
2. Separate all of the shapes and select the colour combinations that you intend to use. Attach the fusible to the rear of the fabric. Cut out the shapes. Remove the backing paper revealing the tacky surface of the fusible. Using the photograph as a guide set out the applique shapes - making sure that the shapes do not come any closer than 1" to the edges of the fabric, except for the lower edge where the shapes should be 3/4" from the edge of the fabric. Once you are happy with your design iron it in place.
3. Using the photo of the as a reference and a water soluble pen, mark out the stitching detail of the bunny face & flower stems
4. Make a a quilt sandwich with the pillow top, batting and lining fabric using spray baste – be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
5. Change your foot to a free motion foot and drop your feed dogs. Select a top & bobbin thread to complement the shape you will be working on. Begin by lowering your needle into the quilt an inch or so from the shape. Raise the needle and pull on the top thread pulling the bobbin thread through to the top. Lower and raise the needle again temporarily securing the two threads on the top of the pillow surface. Slide your pillow top to your intended starting point and lower your needle. Free motion stitch close to the edges of all of the appliqué shapes stitching over each area at least twice.Take several stitches close together at the start & finish points of each applique shape this will secure your stitches allowing you to cut the threads at the quilt surface eliminating the need to bury your threads.
6. To complete the stitching detail of the bunny's face stitch over the marked line a couple of times until the row of stitching is the desired thickness – I used two rows of stitching.
7. To complete the flower stems I used a machine stitch that looks like a hand back stitch - if you don't have a suitable stitch you could complete this in the same manner as you did the bunny's face - you would need to do 4 to 6 rows of stitching to achieve a line thick enough.
8. Once you have finished this process complete the background quilting. I used an echo swirl background fill design.
So that's it for this post I'll be back in a bit so with the rest ... I think I will make mine into a little cushion ... how original!! :) What will you do with yours??? Good yomtov! ... I'll be snacking on some pretty mean chicken soup tonight & chopped herring!!! Yum! Kellie PS. Look what I found in my letter box yesterday ...
but more about this next time...
I was surfing the net,,,google is my friend here,,,and I found your amazing blog. I take care of my five grandchildren and so I wanted to make a quilt and some pillows for my daughters sofa for Easter and when I ran across this I fell in love. Can you tell me what stitch you use when you applique and also what thread you use? I have done a lot of applique but I always use the same old zig zag stitch so was wondering if there were some others that would work and look fantabulous....
