Three of three ...

And last but by all means not least this is Peak Hour ...

It's featured in this months Homespun magazine ... my poor babies spend their time asking when they will see their quilts again ... :( this one is still doing the craft market circuit with Universal Magazines... so Joshua hasn't really gotten to enjoy it yet.

All of these little cars have been appliqued using raw edge applique ... and although I know some of you will run screaming for the hills this really is a very effective and quick method of applique ... that ANYONE can do with patience & practice!

Seeing this project isn't actually a 'proper' DLN release there is another pattern release that goes with this post ... well actually there are four. I have long agonised over the release of these four small projects and I have finally been talked into it by a very sweet friend of mine .... you know who you are ... and you are probably regretting it already!!!!!

Two of Three ...

A few months ago Joshua brought home a library book called Silly Billy by Anthony Browne .... all of the kids just loved this book! The pictures were delightful and the storyline really appealed to us all ... particularly our Jessica. In the story Billy worried about everything ... and I mean everything!!!! This all stopped when he slept over at his Grandmother's house - she gave him some worry dolls to help take care of his worries ... there is a whole lot more to this story than this but I'm not going to spoil it for you ...

Our Jessica is a worrier .... she worries about everything! I can't tell you the trouble this poor little girl has sleeping. When she is in a really bad state her room literally glows from the number of lights she has on.  After we read this story I knew I wanted to make a quilt using Worry Dolls to help my sweet little girl feel safe ... and  this is what I came up with ...

Finished Quilt Size: 52” x 52” (132cm x 132cm)

 I really love this quilt ... as does Jessie!

The quilt is intended as a cuddle quilt being a lap quilt size. You could easily change this pattern around a million different ways to make it yours ... I'd like to see it made up with a simple pieced center and then run a border of little worry dolls around the edge. All of the dolls, hair & clothing are interchangeable so that you can make them look like who ever you want them to which is a lot of fun!

 
Although this is a more girlie project .. my boys are waiting 'patiently' for me to make up a cushion for them with a boy doll dressed in their football teams colours ... and because there are some boys included in the pattern wouldn't a quilt made up entirely of football players be terrific for a football fanatic!

The pattern includes instructions to make up two different cushions .. you can make the doll to suit the little person you're making the cushion for ... it also includes the entire alphabet ... so you don't have to change your children's names!

If you happen to be spending the June / July school holidays on or near the Sunshine Coast you may like visit Patchwork Angel and take a peek at this quilt in the 'flesh' one of the cushions is also visiting with A2F.

I am going to be teaching again at Patchwork Angel on the 2nd & 3rd of October  - unfortunately this class is already booked out ... it just happens to be in the last weekend of the Victorian school holidays so my entire crew will be coming along with me before the class so that we can take in some of that beautiful sunshine and all of the theme parks too of course ... I can't wait!!!!!!

One of three ...

I have been waiting until after I post about the last 3 months worth of classes before I show you my new designs ... but I have decided that if I wait any longer I would be able to refer to these projects as new!!!!!

The first of these projects is Alphabet Soup!

 
This is a single bed sized quilt that I put together using raw edge applique and my method of trapunto ... I think I will plan some classes around trapunto for next year ....

 
This quilt came together really quickly taking only a few weeks to complete. I just love the extra dimension from the trapunto, it looks terrific on a bed!

This is Ben's quilt, so I made it with my boy in mind ... mind you he hasn't slept under it yet! I would love to have the time to make it up in girlie colours!

Joseph's Coat ...

 
Unfortunately, all of the Melbourne 'Joseph's Coaters' are super slack ... sorry guys... and are all a ways away from being able to complete the next step in their progress of the quilt but fear not I have a new plan so watchthis space and in the next few weeks I should be able to show you how to put togetherer the next 3 rows.

PS. I have decided to begin a new page, of sorts, to post photos from my classes ... so hopefully this will make it a little easier to maintain because I am having a lot of trouble keeping up at the moment. I guess we'll see if this solves my problem ... but more on this later.

Mmmmm ... what do you think?

This week has been a full one trying to catch up with life that went on hold while we were in the States. I have a to do list a mile long including a commissioned quilt for Homespun which is due all too soon ... so what do you think I spent my last couple of days doing? Well it certainly wasn't the Homespun project ... oh no that would be far too sensible! Instead I though I would whip up a new project to use as a class project for tomorrows Hettie's Patch class. As always I like to live life on the edge ... I ended up rushing to make up the cushion back & attach the binding early this afternoon ... but all didn't quite go to plan ........

... where do you think the tip of this needle might be? Well your guess is as good as mine because when I finally plucked up the courage to press the button to raise the needle it was no where to be found! But I certainly never had time to waste having my finger x-rayed ... I had a project to finish & a plane to catch! So against my Local Doctor's advice I wrapped up my finger and went about my business ... he did say I should try and keep it up ... but it's the wrong finger for that!!!!!!

Now I just need to sew down the binding before tomorrow morning ... why did it have to be a finger on my left hand?????

Joseph's Coat project ... It’s well and truly time to be posting the tutorial that will help you to join rows 3, 4 & 5 of your Joseph's Coat quilt top ... however because I have been so bogged down with other things I haven't gotten my bocks finished so that I can show step by step photos of the process. This has been worrying me quite a lot but I am hoping that I have managed to come up with a solution .... I’m hoping that there’s someone who lives in the Melbourne area who has completed the 21 blocks needed to finish this step who would be prepared to meet with me so that we can work through this stage together. You would need to be able to meet with me, probably on several occasions, in order to take the step by step photos needed to write the tutorial. You will only need to do the stitching … I’ll write the tutorial. If you would like to do this with me please email me as soon as possible.

Boooooo!

Have you been wondering where I've been hiding? Well brace yourselves because I am going to tell you whether you like it or not!!!!!!

The Monday before last Jan and I set out on an epic journey that ended up taking a whole lot longer than initially anticipated! 36 hours later, 4 times through Customs and 5 boarding passes later .... we landed in Minneapolis somewhat jaded but very excited to meet the infamous Thimbleanna ... and yes her post is going to be a whole lot more fun to read than mine so go read it right now!!!! 

What brought the three of us to this very beautiful, stinking hot & sales tax free city I hear you all ask ... well the International Spring Quilt Market of course! The planning and anticipation that has been involved in this event has been responsible for many a sleepless night in the Don't Look Now household and the reason for such sporadic blog posts this year ...

So was it all worth it? Absolutely!!!!!

I had an absolute ball with Jan & Anna ... we laughed so much we cried ... over and over again!

... mind you we also worked bloody hard!

Oh and thank you yet again for the use of the Puppet Theatre Sue!!!!!! You saved my life yet again!!!

 

Anna was the design genius behind the entire stand ... gracing us with her beautiful chandelier ... that usually lives in her sewing room!!!!!!!! I wish!

Other than all of this hard work it was terrific running into so many wonderful Australian designers at market!!!!

This is the lovely Sue Daley who was an enormous help to me with planing the set up of the stand! Thank you so much Sue!

I was also really pleased to catch up with Anni Downs ... who I don't have a photo of and who I can't even steal a photo from because she hasn't posted about the show yet ... thank you Anni I am so grateful for the help and advice you gave me in the months leading up to the market!

And of course the gorgeous Helen from Pattern Press & Hugs & Kisses . This picture has been stolen from Helen ... because I didn't manage to leave my stand to take photos of everyone else's stands because most of the time I felt so nervous I could have vomited right where I stood!!!

Apart from all of the Australians at market I had the pleasure of meeting quite a few American VIP's!

This is the lovely Anne from Bunnyhill who stopped by the Don't Look Now stand to say hello ... mostly to our Anna but I thought I would get a photo too!!!!!

And I bet you can't even guess who bought my patterns to sell in their stores ..... shall I tell you?

 
The beautiful Nancy & Linda from Possibilities .... I love these guys!!!!! This would have to have been the highlight of my show!!!!!!  

And brace yourself ... last but not least ....Valori Wells!!!!!! You can now purchase my patterns from the Stitching Post! What I wouldn't give to go shopping there! Perhaps after Houston?

So now there are around 60 new retailers in the US that stock my patterns!!!! Yay!!!!!!!!!

I will start work on listing all of these over the next couple of weeks so stay tuned.

 
Thank you so much Jan & Anna for working so hard over the week of market I could never have done this without you both. Thank you for putting up with me and for making the down time so much fun!!!!!!!!! Please make sure you stop over an check out Jan's posts ... I was wondering what she was doing frantically typing away over the past few evenings .... she has posted a few beautiful posts about market & Minneapolis.

And as for the Don't Look Now family all the way over on the other side of the world ... well they haven't been having such a fun time without their Mummy. Mr Don't Look Now resorted to sending the littlest of the little people off to bed with a piece of my fabric to help him sleep .... I'm just hoping that it wasn't my best fabric - just joking Josh ... I of all people know how much better you feel when you cuddle fabric!!! Jessie has also resorted to my cuddling fabric ... but poor Joshua has also been crying at school ... perhaps Mr DLN should have sent him off to school with my Bernina ... that would make anyone feel better!!!!

I released two new patterns at market ... which I had wanted to show you all first but I ran out of time before we left ... so we will have the official unveiling this week sometime :) ... but if you take a look at my stand you will see a couple of unfamillar ones I'm sure!

Quite a few people have said that they intend to make a 'girly' version of this quilt! It can't wait to see one made up, I think it would look spectacular!

Quite a few weeks ago now a group of girls who took one of my workshops at Ballarat Patchwork totally blew me away with their skills, enthusiasm & industriousness! These girls really got the most that they could get from this class!

Most of the local classes that I run are held with a week or two break in between the two days of class. During the break the girls work on their technique and come back for the second day with some practice under their belt and any questions that they may have though of when they were working at home.

This class took full advantage of this and returned to the second day having finished their original practice piece and in a couple of cases finished a second practice piece and started on a third project!!!!!

It was a pleasure to teach you all! Thank you!

Little Monsters are on the loose!

OK ... I know a lot of you have been waiting for this ... Little Monsters is finally ready for release under the Don't Look Now lable!!!!

 

This quilt uses turned edge applique, raw edge applique & my simplified method of trapunto - the pattern provides instructions for all of these techniques.

There are also two bonus cushion designs included in the pattern!

and no ... you won't need to apply to change your son's name in order to make the cushion on the left ... which is called Monogram Monsters! I have included instructions so that you can adapt this project to suit any name! The cushion on the right is called Peek-A-Boo!

You can access this pattern from any of the retailers who stock my patterns ... if your local shop doesn't have it in stock yet then please just ask and they will be able to get it in for you.

Several people have asked for fabric packs for this quilt Ballarat Patchwork, Patchwork Angel, Addicted to Fabric & Blueberries ... just to name a few are all able to put together packs for this quilt.

The lead up to the beginning of April really has been outrageously busy - which has meant that I have missed out on sharing many things with you ... I will get to these things I promise ... including classes at Patchwork Angel, Patchwork on Central Park, Ballarat Patchwork & Blueberries - I haven't forgotten you! I'm sorry guys there just isn't enough time in the day at the moment!!!

It is Quilting Month at Sew Mama Sew this month and I am one of their guest editors ... which is pretty exciting to say the least. There are lots of things happening over there so make sure you drop over and take a peek ... I will be writing a post later in the month regarding Domestic Machine Quilting ... so stay tuned!

Before I go ... another little look at something else I have been working on ...

 
 .... I love this project! Just another couple of weeks should do this one and I'll be able to manage a 'full frontal'!!!

PS. This months Homespun Magazine features a block that I designed for this year's Charity Block of the Month - Life is a Celebration

This is a great project that has some pretty terrific other designers who have also put blocks together for the project.

 
Unfortunately, the dimensions of the centre white on white block are incorrect... the correct dimensions for this panel are .... 17 1/2" x 13 1/2". If you have already cut this block incorrectly ... set the fabric aside and you will be able to selvage this fabric to use elsewhere in the project.  

 
I thought you might also like to see this ad from Patchwork Angel which was also featured in the magazine!!!! I seem to recognize many of these quilts & cushions!!!!

Short & sweet!

How on earth did the 23rd of April turn into the 13th of April? So much for my New Years resolution to post shorter, more frequent posts. The problem with blogging is that the longer you leave it between posts the more there is to share which makes writing the post even more daunting!

I really do have lots to share ... but from this point forward I am going to limit my posts to one or two points ... or at least that is the plan!

The Joseph's Coat project has seen one of the participants, Lina finish her quilt top!

How amazing is this quilt? You really have done a terrific job Lina & it has been an absolute pleasure having you join in! You have participated with such enthusiasm! I have enjoyed watching your progress and I I looking forward to now watching you go through the quilting process!

Lina has completed her quilt using a machine applique technique which I will use for the alternative quilt that I plan to start later in the year.

In my last post I asked for those of you who were joining in to write a progress post so that we could all visit and take a look at your project so far. Thank you so much to those of you who took the time to do this ... believe me I know how hard it is to find time to blog!!! ;) I have really enjoyed popping over and 'meeting' you all! The Patchwork House Joseph's Coat class was a good one ... particularly because it was a terrific group of girls! Some how I managed to forget to take a group photo so I only have a few little snap shots of the day ...

 
I have decided to continue to run this class every 6 to 8 weeks for the time being ...

 
this time we will try holding it on a Thursday as it seems that Tuesdays are bad days for so many of you.

! This class has been a very long time in the planning so I am really looking forward to it! This class was booked out several months ago ... but as life is so variable there are now a couple of places available so if you can make it please come along it should be a terrific class!

Joseph's Coat week 18 round up ...

Long time no Joseph's Coat post!!!! Sorry guys things have hotted up here which has made it a little difficult to keep up with blogging ... I hope that you can all stick with me throughout this quilt along even when my life & business get the better of me!

What should we have finished by now???

We should have a total of 21 blocks finished & have pieced together rows 1 & 2 ... mind you I have been VERY conservative here and I am still WAY behind!!!! I have managed to piece my first two rows and I have sewn down 2 more blocks and I have another 5 waiting patiently in my sewing bag!!!

I'm sure that I'm not the only one having trouble getting into the next stage of the quilt!

The plan from here is to continue completing blocks until we have made a total of 35 blocks. We will then piece together rows 3, 4 & 5 ... let's aim for week 30 to be at the stage of piecing these rows together (first week in June) ... I have drawn this out a little because of the Spring Quilt Market.

So guys what are you up to? I think it would be good to hear where everyone is positioned to help us all feel a little bit better!!!! Marielle actually suggested quite some time ago that it would be nice to do a mass progress post ... I love this idea! If you would like to join in all you will need to do is write a post about your journey so far, for example;

Fabric alert ... the amount of fabric that was estimated for the petal shapes has been underestimated ... you will actually need another 1.5m of scraps to make your blocks into the quilt that was originally planned. If you are using scraps then this shouldn't cause you any problems ... however if you aren't using scraps then you will want to top up your fabric as soon as possible. Remember that you need to be frugal with your fabric use ... if you aren't being frugal or if you are fussy cutting your fabrics you will need to take this into account.

An Alternativeyou may like to consider making your quilt 6 rows x 6 1/2 blocks ... you could then use a border as deep as the 7th row would have made the quilt. An applique freeze in these borders would then make this a pretty special quilt. I mentioned a couple of moths ago that I plan to make another of these quilts ... by machine next time!!! The centre of this quilt will be smaller, I will frame this centre panel with borders decorated with applique. I will include these details in this series of tutorials, if you are interested ... but I wont have time to start this until I return from Spring Market in June.

... this amazing quilt belongs to Jenny. It is an antique that she bought several years ago while visiting the US. I wish you could see this quilt it is absolutely fantastic ... and you know what, hardly any of the points actually meet!!! I thought that this might do the hearts of those of you who have been having some problems, some good!!!! Jenny has another two of these in her collection ...she has a Joseph's Coat habit!

Life around the home of DLN has taken a rather busy turn since the kids went back to school those few short weeks ago! Time allotted for blogging is being soaked up with so many other things!!! Sorry for the absence!

We have just returned home after spending the long weekend on Phillip Island. We spent lots of time doing the usual family activities but best of all we got to watch the Fairy Penguins ... in the pouring rain ... but believe it or not it was still lots of fun!

 Perfection at Patchwork House

This little project belongs to Brianna! What a beautiful collection of fabrics! Brianna worked hard even though her machine wasn't so kind to her at times! Brianna is working on Meg's Garden ... hopefully she will share it with us once she's finished!!!

Jacinta took to this like a duck to water! Her free motion was terrific & she was an absolute star at fussy cutting!

Robyn was absolutely amazing! Her skills were second to none by the end of the two days! Her raw edge was spectacular and her free motion was excellent! I'm looking forward to seeing your version of Rainbow Lollipops Robyn!

Fran worked up a storm and even managed to put her cushion together by the end of the class while still managing to put in lots of time practicing her free motion stitching!

There are a few photos missing here to guys so I would love it if you could help me fill in the blanks!
